We’ve been selected to receive grant funding from The Climatics!

We’re very excited to be able to announce that Coal Action Network Aotearoa/Te Kāhui Kāti Waro o Aotearoa is one of four organisations which has been selected for inclusion in the latest funding round from The Climatics, the Aotearoa climate philanthropy organisation founded by Pip Wheaton and MJ Bethell.

We will be funded to produce a new edition of our influential 2015 report Jobs After Coal: A Just Transition for New Zealand Communities (PDF)

As The Climatics say in their blog post about funding our work:

Coal Action Network Aotearoa has been digging into this story for over a decade. Back in 2015, they published Jobs After Coal: A Just Transition for New Zealand Communities. It was a detailed, rigorously researched report that built the evidence for what a transition away from coal could look like for workers and the communities that depend on mining. The report had real political impact at a time when the conversation was stuck.

Now, with a new political environment and the urgency of two coal mining expansions listed in the Fast-Track Approvals Act, they’re updating it.We have been wanting to do this update for the last couple of years, as we think the regressive fossil fuel policies of the current Government have made it necessary to again educate decision-makers and the public on why a just transition away from coal is important and how it can be achieved. But as a comparatively small volunteer organisation, we didn’t have the capacity to do the substantial work necessary. Now, with many thanks to The Climatics, we will.

Although we know we’ll be funded to do this mahi, we don’t yet know for how much. That depends on how much The Climatics can raise during their current funding round – see how you can help below!

Now is a great time to donate to this funding round. Here’s the latest from Pip & MJ about the progress of the funding round:

Together, our community has raised $44,189 so far. We’re nearly halfway to our goal, and the room is filling up.

Now we have a $10,000 match fund to help us push past the halfway mark!

That’s right, it’s a match made in climate heaven.

Every dollar that comes into the pool right now gets matched, so whatever is contributed goes further than it would on any other night.

In addition to being matched dollar for dollar, every donation over $5 is tax-deductible, and it all goes directly to this amazing group of organisations. Everyone’s winning.

You’ve just met the lineup. These are organisations doing hard work so if you’re feeling it, this is your moment.

Donate to The Climatics’s funding round and help fund this mahi.

More about our Te Reo name, Te Kāhui Kāti Waro o Aotearoa

Coal Action Network Aotearoa now has a name in Te Reo as well as in English, meaning that our official name as an incorporated society has become Coal Action Network Aotearoa,Te Kāhui Kāti Waro O Aotearoa, Incorporated.

We are very honoured and grateful to have been gifted this Te Reo name by Ani Wainui, Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM). In literal translation, this name means “The group that closes coal, in Aotearoa”, and achieving that aim is what we will continue to strive for. This also incorporates our kaupapa of honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our mahi.
