For the record, and for the avoidance of doubt, I do not trash talk CANA, and I distance myself from anyone who does. The Inside Resources readership appreciated the opportunity to read CANA's views. I am detecting more discussion within the coal sector, producers and users, around what their climate strategy should be.

Cindy, thanks. Since this is on the public record, you will have no objection to me publishing the entire commentary as a column on our web site. I think it is relevant to our readers.

Two comments from me. My editorial and personal position is that mining and quarrying are important industries in NZ, providing they are carried out responsibly, i.e. with regard to workplace health and safety, the environment and conservation, including climate change, and genuine engagement with communities and iwi.

In the late 1980s the desire for a free market in NZ destroyed many industries in New Zealand and some regions have never recovered from the damage done. That would go to CANA's call for a Just Transition, way before the Government took up that call.
