Sorry Rob, just an amateur musing on possibilities. I’m sure there are many alternatives to burning fossil fuels. The long chain hydrocarbon molecules are just too precious to destroy.

Perhaps vast quantities of carbon fibre can be made from coal rather than burning it.
Carbon fibre is an excellent substitute for steel in many applications. The resin that binds the carbon fibre together can be sourced from petroleum, again without burning it and releasing its carbon content into the atmosphere.
